CLINICAL LIVERPOOL BREAK ARSENAL JINX

Liverpool scored four times in quick succession either side of half time to stun their hosts, with Philippe Coutinho getting two goals, before a late fightback almost earned Arsenal a point in a thrilling game.

Liverpool have defeated Arsenal at the Emirates stadium for the first time in seven years following a 3 – 4 win in their opening game of the 2016/2017 Premier League season.

Walcott who could have been blamed for missing a chance from the penalty spot scored two minutes later in the 28th minute with a delightful assist from the Nigerian Alex Iwobi. Having missed other opportunites to cement teir lead, Phil Coutinho shut the home crowd with his magnificent free-kick beyond the reach of Petr Cech on the stroke of half time to set up an intense second half.
Liverpool started the second half with more tenacity and were rewarded with three goals in quick succession via Lallana’s volley from the right, Coutinho’s tap in from a Nathaniel Clyne cross and Mane’s wonderful solo goal; all within 15 minutes. Sadio Mane’s effort will surely be considered as an early goal of the season contender as the Senegal international dribbled from the right and cut into his left foot, shooting past Cech in goal.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain replaced an injured Alex Iwobi and made it 2 – 4 when his shot from the left deflected past Mignolet and Calum Chambers made it 3 – 4 when he converted from Santi Carzola’s free-kick, as Liverpool lost concentration. The match, which was marred by various injuries to Aaron Ramsey, Iwobi and Coutinho ended with Liverpoool holding on to prevail in a seven goal thriller.
